Today I’m thinking about major life transitions and how they send vibrations through a lot of different parts of our lives. Major life transitions are things like moving in together, marriage, changing jobs or careers, moving away from home, moving back home, building or buying a first home, getting evicted, earning more money than we’ve ever earned before, or taking a big hit in our income.
What else qualifies? Divorce. Death of a loved one. Changing schools. Embracing new spiritual beliefs. Starting college or dropping out of college. Changing majors. Becoming a bread winner or giving up your role as bread winner. A friend moving away. A friend getting married. Children being born. Children leaving home. Children choosing to live with the “other” parent or a relative. How about losing a home to lava? Losing your crops to flooding or your roof to hurricane winds? Losing a beloved animal friend? Taking on a new puppy? Starting your own business? Adopting or fostering a child? Getting a professional license in your field? All these are big transitions, and their are many more events we could add to the list.
How can you know if you are in the midst of a major life transition? Here are a few things you may notice:
-You feel as if your roles in relationship to other people are shifting. There may be inner tension or outer conflict with others that is caused by the transition you are experiencing. You may find yourself wondering why you have been acting a certain way or doing certain things that no longer benefit you. Your roles are changing and you may feel unsure about what’s next or who you are without the old roles in place.
-You may feel like your are faking it or being a phony. This sometimes happens when we are not sure we can meet the demands of a new job or relationship or situation. You might begin to feel that the pants or shoes we are trying to “step into” are just too big for you. Imagine taking a new job with new responsibilities and suddenly earning double the income you used to. Exciting, right? Yes, and you may doubt your ability to do the job and wonder if you are really “worth” the money.
-You may have difficulty envisioning the future in great detail. This is an important element of a life transition, and it requires some thoughtful work. We all have visionary capacities – imagination, daydreaming, fantasizing, wishing / longing. If your life is changing and you can’t quite see what you want the future to look like, it could be time to devote yourself to envisioning the outcome you want for yourself and those you love.
